Getting around

Ferries, trains & the car

⛴️

Lake ferries

Scheduled passenger ferries (the "white fleet") link the main towns in summer, plus the Konstanz–Meersburg car ferry and a fast Konstanz–Friedrichshafen catamaran. Often the nicest way to travel.

🚆

Trains & buses

A good regional rail network rings the lake and reaches St. Gallen, Schaffhausen and beyond. Ask about a regional day pass or guest card that bundles local transport.

🚗

Driving

Flexible for theme parks and the hills. Note you'll need a Swiss motorway vignette for Swiss motorways and an Austrian vignette for Austrian ones; town parking can be tight in peak hours.

🪪

Guest cards

Many resorts issue a free guest card (e.g. the regional "Bodensee Card") giving free local buses/boats or attraction discounts. Ask at check-in — it can pay for itself fast.

Where to stay

Choosing a base

You don't need to move hotels — the lake is small enough to day-trip from one base.

Konstanz

Biggest town, great transport hub, Mainau & Sea Life on the doorstep, easy Swiss border hops.

🧒 Most to do nearby

Friedrichshafen

Central northern shore, the Zeppelin museum, catamaran links and handy for Ravensburger Spieleland.

Meersburg / Überlingen

Pretty, smaller and central — castles, wine terraces and quick ferries. Lovely but books up early.

Lindau / Bregenz

Eastern end: scenic, near the mountains and the Bregenz Festival, with Austria and Switzerland close.

Put it together

A sample 7-day plan

A balanced rhythm: alternate big days with slower lakeside ones, and keep a flexible day for weather.

  • Day 1Arrive, settle in, easy harbour walk and first ice cream. Evening promenade stroll.
  • Day 2Mainau flower island + a swim at a nearby lido.
  • Day 3Big day out: Ravensburger Spieleland.
  • Day 4Slow day — Reichenau island by bike, or beach & pedalos.
  • Day 5Day trip: Rhine Falls & Schaffhausen (or swap for weather).
  • Day 6Meersburg castle + Affenberg monkeys; ferry rides between.
  • Day 7Flexible / favourite repeat, last swim, pack up.

📌 Booking reminders

Reserve theme-park and Bregenz Festival tickets ahead, confirm ferry timetables for the dates you travel, and double-check attraction opening hours — a few close one day a week. This guide is a planning aid, not a live timetable.
